Writing Center Visit

Talk about your visit. What did you like about it? What did you dislike? What strategies did the tutor use? What can you take from this experience and apply to your future teaching?

I did my visit last Friday, and I had a pretty good experience. I had my paper completely finished, and as Missy anticipated the tutor had little to say about it. However, I did enjoy just getting to address some of my concerns with my paper with someone, and found him to be very helpful in that respect. I had gone before this, so I knew what to expect with the writing center, but I still found it more positive than I remembered. What I most liked about the experience was that my tutor approached me as an equal, and I think that would be something I would like to do in my own conferencing with students. I think some of our readings have talked about this idea of being a fellow writer, or just stepping out of the grader role.

I did my visit a couple weeks ago, and I actually enjoyed it a lot. I will say that I did not expect to, as I thought that they would be slightly condescending and that they wouldn't tell me anything new.

I hadn't even started yet; getting started is always the hardest part for me. Thus, I decided to go whenever I needed the most help. My tutor was really nice and helped me brainstorm on all aspects of the prompt. He didn't act like he knew more about writing than I did (which I greatly appreciated), and he treated me like an equal instead of someone who was getting paid to critique my ideas.

We kind of just bounced ideas back and forth off of each other, and his ideas grew a lot of thoughts in my brain about the process of my writing in general.

I actually enjoyed my experience at the writing center, and would definitely go back if I was ever questioning my prompt or assignment.
