Web Conferences

At first when we were informed that we would be going through with the web conferences I felt excited because I would be able to help these students more by actually talking to them instead of just leaving them comments and written feedback. I went back and looked at the final draft that was posted by a student from the first set of essays we responded to and I noticed that the only suggestions of mine that she applied were the grammatical ones. I felt like a spent a good deal of time and put some real effort into suggesting items for revision and then the grammar was the only thing changed. So I was hoping that the web conferences would be better. I felt like I was prepared and I had a substantial amount of feedback to share. I was not nervous until the first conference. This one did not go as well as I had wanted it to but the other three made up for it. I felt more confident during the last three interviews than the first. I felt like two of my students were truly interested in my feedback; they were taking notes and asking questions which I really enjoyed. Then, the other two were not as responsive which is typical. Hopefully, my suggestions were considered and applied more than in the last set of essays.

I actually really liked the web based conferences. After we got a few of the kinks worked out with the sound distortion. It was so good to put a face to a paper.
I found all the students really responsive and interested and I actually thought I was better able to understand their concerns talking with them face to face.
It did make me realize how much of what you say they really key on and take to heart.
All in all I would give the experience an 8.5.

Michelle, unfortunately you and Jennifer had to deal with all that annoying feedback. We didn't have that on Wednesday or Friday--not sure what the difference was.

Agreed. The first conference was a bit unnerving especially when I could not see the student. I think perhaps it would have been better to have the students physically within the same area. But as they are so far away from our location, the web conferences were a great way to speak with actual students. All technology can display bugs from time to time, so it does makes things a bit difficult when things do not work correctly. But when things do work correctly it is just great.

I thought the web conferences were good. It'll be interesting, like Natalie said, to see what suggestions the students used and how our critiques changed their papers. I'm a little embarrassed now though because I definitely told some of my students that some of their citations were wrong because I had never seen the specific citation before, when actually they were right. Oops. I need to go through and find the students I did that to and leave a comment. I thought you always just put the first word of the citation and a page #. I really need to go back and re-look at some of this stuff! Hahaha
